FLS 3 Integrated Amplifier

Over 20 years of experience designing cutting edge, high performance audio equipment has gone into the Audia Flight FLS 3 Integrated Amplifier. The result is, even by Audia Flight’s high standards, an incredible multi-faceted component! Using the experience with their (recently discontinued) Classic Series and their flagship Strumento Series, every detail, however minute, has been carefully thought through for the discriminating audio enthusiast and music lover. And, yet, the FLS 3 Integrated Amp offers an exceptionally good value and, like all Audia Flight products, it is made entirely in Italy.

Starting with its elegant Italian exterior, the FLS 3 Integrated Amplifier has solidly built casework with a thick aluminum (10mm) front panel, positive-action metal pushbutton selectors, and a nicely-weighted pleasing to the touch aluminum volume knob, all expertly crafted and finely finished. In your hand you’ll also find a compact, ergonomic remote control hewn from solid aluminum. A large, blue OLED display will keep your eyes informed about the input choice (each input can be named as you choose) and other feature selections as you engage them.

Inside the FLS 3’s sophisticated electronic interior are a series of critical features that make this integrated amplifier perform well above other integrated amplifiers within its category and price range. An high performance ALPS Blue potentiometer provides an accurate volume control at all settings. Eight power supplies are in charge of all amplification stages up to the driver transistor stage, with 13.200uF total capacitance available for the stabilized power supplies until the driver transistor section. Four high-current power supplies (72.000µF) are then dedicated solely to the output driver stages. If that’s not enough, all inputs feature sealed relays in an inert atmosphere and gold terminations! And, as following the Audia Flight philosophy for best sonic performance, the logic control section features its own toroidal transformer and is connect to the analog section via photo-couplers only. Driving your speakers are two 100 Watt amplifiers with a large 500VA toroidal audio transformer. In short the FLS 3 is a dual mono design, with Audia Flight’s current feedback circuitry design, a sophisticated preamp section, and deep, well-controlled bass that brings your loudspeakers and your music alive with a powerful, stunning sonic picture. Oh, and did we mention it’s a seriously great headphone amplifier with the option for an internal DAC and phono stage? No? Read on then…

Interfacing with your FLS 3 is also a pleasure, with input selection, volume control, and mute control (with a memory of the previous level) via front panel or remote control . The user can choose from four unbalanced analog inputs (one optionally phono), one balanced analog input, and even from an optional USB digital input (adding an input 6). With the FLS3 that includes the DAC and phono stage you get an optional USB 24bit 192KHz DAC board with its high grade, discreet circuitry achieves a remarkable musical experience from your digital files, while the optional pure analog MM/MC phono board with adjustable gain and loading (via analog Input 1) will bring your turntable, phono cartridges, and vinyl collection to vibrant life.

Not surprisingly, then, the Audia Flight FLS 3 also has many standard features. A discreet, high-performance headphone amplifier designed to properly drive your headphones of choice. A bypass (or “direct”) feature, selectable by remote control, allows the user to turn the FLS 3 into a power amplifier through any assigned analog input: you may then include the amplifier in a multi-channel system (such as a home theater) as the power amplifier for the main speakers, while still using the same speakers for reference quality two channel listening with stereo sources connected to the FLS 3. Finally, rounding out this well thought out, highly flexible design out is a remote trigger input, Monitor input, Record output, and an unbalanced Preamplifier output (with the ability to turn off the FLS 3’s internal amplifiers should you wish). Overall the Audia Flight FLS 3 Integrated Amplifier is a pleasure to behold, to use, and to listen to with many sources and nearly any loudspeaker.

Flight Phono Preamplifier

Audia Flight’a highly acclaimed dual input phono preamp has set the standard for solid state phono preamplifier performance since it’s introduction in 2008. Now in it’s most refined iteration, the Flight Phono is distinguished by it’s separate power supply (styled to compliment the stylish chassis), dedicated input MM and/or MC preamplifier boards, high gain capability (74dB – maximum selection), and ultra low noise. The substantial chassis also shields all sections of the preamp and fully eliminates vibrations and resonance from the transformers. Simply put, the Flight Phono is “dead quiet.”

The Flight Phono preamp is based on Audia Flight’s current feedback philosophy which yields sonic speed and unparalleled accuracy. The input preamp boards are fully independent in order to provide for both MM or MC cartridges performance perfection. This decision for fully separate boards is simply driven by the unique electrical characteristics (and thus notably different circuit-wise) MM or MC cartridges have.

Functionally, the Flight Phono utilizes a “soft start” function allowing an internal logic/operational check and offset protection. Selectable mono and alternate RIAA settings are also incorporated, an important element in achieving the best sound. The mono selector sums the left and right channels together in the same manner as a mono cartridge would and will provide true mono sonic performance. A full compliment of input impedance loading completes the perfect design of the Flight Phono.

FLS4 Stereo Power Amplifier

The Audia Flight FLS 4 Stereo Power Amplifier is an incredible stereo power amplifier with high response speed (bandwidth more than 0,7MHz), high power (up to 900 Watts), and nearly unlimited speaker driving/control capability. Like the Strumento Series that begot the LFS4, Audia Flight’s engineers and designers have used their trained human ears to aide us in the FLS 4’s design process. This effort has allowed them to produce an amplifier that more closely achieves the overarching Audia Flight goal of sonic perfection, much like a luthier uses years of experience, craftsmanship, and keen ear to find the perfect tonal character and emotional response for their instruments.

Like its Strumento brethren the FLS 4’s chassis begins its life as an ultra high grade, bespoke aluminum cast. After the CNC finishing work is completed, every part is then closely inspected and “mirror polished” by hand. Some critical areas are further finished by hand, with shot peening and anodization completing the beautiful metal work. The final touch is an elegant silk-screening process.

Similarities to the Strumento Series amplifiers can also be found within the FLS 4 as well. A long list would include fully balanced circuitry, highly selected components, 32 high grade power devices, and a power supply built with low impedance capacitors (288.000µF alone on the main power suppliers). The FLS 4’s gain stage is once again the exclusive Audia Flight design consisting of an entirely class A current-feedback circuitry. And to further isolate this critical part of the amplification process from interference and grant thermal stabilization for all of its discrete components, the gain stage is enclosed within an aluminum box and encapsulated in an epoxy resin. Add to this that the main power supply is made by n.16 18.000µF 50V low impedance capacitors and is then composed of two super high current power supplies per channel, as well as four stabilized independent stages per each channel: two for the input stages and two for the Audia Flight current feedback stage! (Try saying or reading that in one breath!) And, of course, as is the Audia Flight philosophy, one 15VA toroidal transformer is used for the logic control and protection circuit in order to completely isolate it from the audio circuit. With a total then of 12 power supplies, custom printed circuit boards with an extra high-grade surface copper, a 2000VA toroidal audio transformer enclosed within two ferromagnetic shields and encapsulated by epoxy resin powering the output stage, no fuses in the main power supply for the output stage (Massimiliano and Andrea, aka “the designers,” find fuses are like a “resistors” and can negatively impact the sound) as a current sensor read by microprocessor is employed, and 200 Watts RMS @ 8 Ohms output power one finds numerous “Strumento-esque” elements have gone into making the FLS 4 Stereo Power Amplifier capable of providing the listener with the best performance and emotional musical experience.

So one can see in the FLS 4 Stereo Power Amplifier the Audia Flight familial resemblance is hard at work. Much like our reference Strumento N° 4 mk2 Stereo Power Amplifier, the FLS4 Stereo Power Amplifier is designed to bring your music to life and your audio system to another level of perfection.

Strumento Series

Strumento Nº 1 mk2 Stereo Preamplifier

It has long been said, “the heart of any audio system is the preamplifier.” The preamplifier’s job sounds simple: convey a purity of sound, without coloration or adulteration of original audio signal, with nothing being added but also nothing being lost in translation. Okay, so it’s not that easy. And yet that’s where the team’s efforts at Audia Flight have elevated the preamplifier state of the art. The Audia Flight Strumento N° 1 mk2 Stereo Preamplifier is the perfect device to transfer a perfect signal to any power amplifier with its precision, accuracy, dynamics and incredible signal speed (bandwidth more than 1MHz). Massimiliano and Andrea used their trained human ears to aide them in making circuit refinements over the original Strumento N° 1 (such small, but critical changes include the value of resistors and capacitors). This effort has allowed them to more closely achieve their goal of sonic perfection with the Strumento N° 1 mk2, much like a luthier uses years of experience, craftsmanship, and keen ear to find the perfect tonal character and emotional response for their instruments.

The Strumento N° 1 mk2 chassis begins its life as an ultra high grade, bespoke aluminum cast. After the CNC finishing work is completed, every part is then closely inspected and “mirror polished” by hand. Some critical areas are further finished by hand, with shot peening and anodization completing the beautiful metal work. The final touch is an elegant silk-screening process..

Within the Strumento N° 1 mk2’s gorgeous chassis one finds it is powered by four toroidal transformers (two 75VA toroidal audio transformers for the main stages, one 25VA toroidal audio transformer for the control boards, and one 15VA toroidal transformer for the logic board), all enclosed within a ferromagnetic shield and encapsulated by epoxy resin. The main power supply is extremely low noise, the filter being made by ultra-fast rectifiers and n.40 680µF 100V extra low impedance capacitors. On the electrolytic capacitors an EMI shield and vibration damping material is used to reduce any physical noises to a minimum. The main power supply is composed of eight, very low noise power supply stages. Each amplification channel with its fully balanced circuitry is on an independent print board. Custom printed circuit boards with an extra high-grade surface copper are used, as ultra pure copper bars are used for ground and power supplies. After the input selection and a buffer, the input signal meets the volume control.

A crucial point in all preamplifiers is represented by the volume control. Often the volume control can introduce a variable impedance element as a function of the attenuation value (that is to say, the position of the potentiometer). The undesirable result is that the frequency response, slew-rate and even the internal impedance couplings among different stages are not fixed and become a function of the attenuation value (volume). This ultimately reduces the preamplifier’s ability to produce an accurate signal for the power amplifiers to further amplify. For this reason, Audia Flight has developed a constant impedance attenuator. This custom Audia Flight attenuator is composed of discrete components (low-noise metallic film resistors and relays) and provides a gain range as high as 127 dB while providing constant steps of 0.5 dB. The accurate high-performance result we have obtained with this attenuator likely is well beyond standard attenuators found elsewhere, as our measurements show that the Strumento N° 1 mk2 has an out of the ordinary extended frequency response (3Hz / 1MHz –3 dB) and the high value of slew rate (>250V/µs throughout the entire gain range (-90 / +10 dB). This completely new volume control has constant impedance and it is absolutely silent as the volume is raised and lowered.

The Strumento N° 1 mk2’s gain stage is an exclusive Audia Flight design consisting of an entirely class A current-feedback circuitry. It is fed by four stabilized independent stages per each channel: two for the input stages and two for the output stage. The gain stage is enclosed within an aluminum box and encapsulated by epoxy resin to grant a thermal stabilization for all gain stage’s components. Additionally, a large aluminum plate is used to dissipate thermal energy of the gain stages. The high-current low-noise output stage is made of Class A biased MOSFET audio devices, and is able to drive any kind of amplifier.

It’s notable to consider that Audia Flight has designed the Strumento N° 1 mk2 with a modular system. Currently in the works are an MM/MC phono module; and a DAC module with SPDIF and USB 192kHz/32bits digital inputs.

Strumento Nº 4 mk2 Stereo Power Amplifier

The Strumento N° 4 mk2 Stereo Power Amplifier is a close-to-perfection state of the art two channel power amplifier that exhibits incredible response speeds (bandwidth greater than 1MHz), high output power (up to 900 Watts), and nearly unlimited speaker driving/control capability. For the mk2 version the Audia Flight team used their experience in designing its sibling the Strumento N° 8 Mono-block Power Amplifier as well as their trained human ears to aide them to further refine the original Strumento N° 4 circuit (such small, but critical changes include the value of resistors and capacitors). This effort has allowed them to more closely achieve their goal of sonic perfection with the Strumento N° 4 mk2, much like a luthier uses years of experience, craftsmanship, and keen ear to find the perfect tonal character and emotional response for their instruments.

The Strumento N° 4 mk2’s chassis begins its life as an ultra high grade, bespoke aluminum cast. After the CNC finishing work is completed, every part is then closely inspected and “mirror polished” by hand. Some critical areas are further finished by hand, with shot peening and anodization completing the beautiful metal work. The final touch is an elegant silk-screening process.

Within the beautiful casework of the Strumento N° 4 mk2 one finds yet more attention to detail and incredible Italian craftsmanship. There you will find a fully balanced circuitry, carefully selected ultra high grade components throughout, a massive power supply built with extra low impedance, ultra high grade capacitors (280.000µF alone on the main power supply), custom printed boards with an extra high-grade surface copper, and ultra pure copper bars in the output stages. But the team at Audia Flight has chosen to not stop there with the Strumento N° 4 mk2 Stereo Power Amplifier! The Strumento N° 4 mk2’s power supply is comprised of two super high current power supplies per channel and four stabilized independent stages for each channel: two for the input stages and two for the Audia Flight current feedback stage. The gain stage’s power supply is designed to achieve extremely low noise, the filter is made by ultra-fast rectifiers and extra low impedance capacitors. Two 150VA toroidal audio transformers are used for the main stages and one 15VA toroidal transformer is used for the logic control and protections. The main power supply is made by n.28 10.000µF 40V extra low impedance capacitors. No fuses are found in the main power supply for the output stage (Massimiliano and Andrea find fuses are like a “resistors” and can negatively impact the sound), instead a current sensor read by microprocessor is employed.

The amplifier’s gain stage is an exclusive Audia Flight design consisting of an entirely class A current-feedback circuitry. To further isolate this critical part of the amplification process from interference and grant thermal stabilization for all of its discrete components, the gain stage is enclosed within an aluminum box and encapsulated in an epoxy resin. Meanwhile, the output stage of the Strumento N° 4 mk2 is powered by a massive 3000VA custom made audio transformer, encapsulated by epoxy resin and sealed within two ferromagnetic shields. Ultra-fast rectifiers instead of fuses are used on the main power supply for the output stage

With every circuit detail addressed, the Audia Flight team then turns to mechanical details to complete this masterpiece! When the amplifier is on a shelf, the power transformers, located on an independent chassis, are physically decoupled from the audio circuit chassis, thus discharging to ground any spurious vibrations from the transformers should they be present.

A masterpiece in aesthetics and electronics in a single chassis, the Strumento N° 4 mk2 Stereo Power Amplifier is surpassed only by a pair of its sibling the Strumento N° 8 Mono-block Power Amplifier.

Strumento Nº 8 Mono-block Power Amplifier

After completing the long development process for the original Strumento N° 4 Stereo Power Amplifier Audia Flight designers Massimiliano and Andrea next sought to redefine the mono-block power amplifier state of the art. As in its single chassis stereo sibling, the Strumento N° 8 is a nearly perfect power amplifier that exhibits incredible response speeds (bandwidth greater than 1MHz), massive output power (up to 2000 Watts), and thanks to its status as a mono-block amplifier unlimited speaker driving/control capability. With the advantage of using a single amplifier for each channel, a pair of  Strumento N° 8 Mono-block Power Amplifiers are able to surpass the performance of the incredible Strumento N° 4 mk2 Stereo Power Amplifier. With a mono-block power amplifier in mind they’ve used their trained human ears to aide them in circuit refinements (such small, but critical changes include the value of resistors and capacitors). This effort has allowed Audia Flight to more closely achieve their goal of sonic perfection with the Strumento N° 8, much like a luthier uses years of experience, craftsmanship, and keen ear to find the perfect tonal character and emotional response for their instruments. One stereo Strumento N° 4 mk2 or two mono-block Strumento N° 8: which do you need? How close to perfection do you picture your system?
